The Children's Room: Serving a Wide Age Range

The Children's Room: Serving a Wide Age Range

We work hard to make the children's room a safe, pleasant place for you and your children to enjoy. Click on the blog title for more on how we do this and how you can help.

We work hard to make the children's room a safe, pleasant place for you and your children to enjoy. If your children are young, however, we need you to remember that the children's room is targeted to serve a wide age range--it is not infant and toddler proof. Materials and activities which are appropriate and necessary for the older children we serve can easily be misused by younger ones. For your child's safety and comfort it is necessary for parents\caregivers to keep infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in your sight at all times.

We also ask that you be respectful of the rights of school aged children while you enjoy the children's room with your younger child. Help your child learn from an early age to be considerate of those who are reading and doing homework. Explain to your child what that means: that the library has to be quiet enough for people to be able to read and learn and that library books have to stay in a special order so children can find the specific books they need for book reports and summer reading lists. Then, set a good example by speaking in a quiet voice and bringing any materials you decide not to check out up to the Help Desk to be reshelved.

Working together, parents, caregivers, and library staff can ensure that visiting the library is a safe, enriching, and enjoyable experience for all children.

THE SUMMER SLIDE

THE SUMMER SLIDE

No, I’m not talking about the slide at the swim club or the pool. Over 100 years of research studies have stressed the importance of providing high- quality summer learning experiences for children to avoid the “summer slide”- what happens to children who have failed to keep up with their reading and studies over the summer months. Because of this educators have to spend time in the fall “re-teaching” what was already taught previously. To continue, click on the blog title.
